Mann Ki Baat has achieved a massive reach of over 100 crore people in 8 years, as per an extensive study by IIM-Rohtak, commissioned by Prasar Bharati.

Mann Ki Baat has brought significant transformation in the Indian demographic, initiating mass movements towards various social causes ranging from ‘swachhata,’ environment protection, promotion of ‘Make in India’ products like Khadi, women empowerment, to yoga, etc., showcasing India’s Jan Shakti.’ Many of these issues are linked with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Shri J.P Nadda appreciated how PM Modi’s Mann Ki Baat has tied the country and the society together by having a soulful dialogue and inspiring and encouraging the people. He mentioned that Mann Ki Baat has become a medium to celebrate the collective spirit of the people of India, and has shed light on their inspiring life journeys.

Dr. Vinay Sahasrabuddhe acknowledged how PM’s Mann Ki Baat has emphasised the importance of sustainability along with spreading awareness on issues such as education, economy, Indian heritage and culture, energy, gender justice, and governance.

Dr. Sumeet Bhasin highlighted a number of aspects about Mann Ki Baat, from its role in reconnecting Indians with their rich legacy, narrating inspiring stories from all the corners of the country, instilling positivity during the Covid-19 pandemic, to promoting a lifestyle for environment, and most importantly, awakening the society for collective action.

The report by PPRC provides an overview of the three major aspects of the transformation brought to the nation by the Prime Minister’s radio broadcast programme and highlights how it has become a contributing factor towards the accelerated development of the country, especially during the ‘Amrit Kaal’. These three aspects are:

(i)    Unleashing India’s ‘Jan Shakti’: strengthening a culture and atmosphere of enhanced people’s participation in regard to crucial issues of social and national importance, many of which

are linked to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as empowering women and the girl child, environment and cleanliness-related movements, promoting the sale of indigenous or ‘Make in India’ products like Khadi, etc. This has enhanced India’s participative governance model.

Ø  The report highlights how the PM’s numerous appeals on Mann Ki Baat to revive Khadi have resulted in a significant jump in sales and production of Khadi across India (179% and 115% growth from 2013 to 2020), directly resulting in the empowerment of the artisans and weavers involved in Khadi production, significantly boosting their income by 33% and 10% respectively.

Ø  The Prime Minister’s appeals on Mann Ki Baat to make ‘Swachhata’ a mass movement have been more than fruitful, with numerous people-driven movements being reported from all corners in the country.

Ø  Another crucial issue addressed by the PM on Mann Ki Baat was the sex ratio across the country. The PM’s Mann Ki Baat has helped make ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ a success story by invoking maximum people’s participation. From 943 in 2011, India’s sex ratio has improved to 1020 in 2019-21, as per NFHS-5 data.

(ii)   Reforming the mindset of the country and inculcating a positive outlook: the Prime Minister has engaged in a regular public discourse with the population of the country through Mann Ki Baat. This has been pivotal in addressing important issues of a wide variety, which did not usually find a platform in a country as large and as diverse as India. Through Mann Ki Baat, Modi Ji has addressed issues ranging from the ill-effects of drug abuse on the society, the impact of the chronic exam-related stress on students, the need to revisit the society’s attitude towards the ‘divyang’ and make it more inclusive, and has illustrated the importance of mental resolve and leadership during the Covid-19 pandemic, among other things.

Ø  The PM has appealed for a #DrugsFreeIndia on Mann Ki Baat by talking about the three D’s that come with drug addiction; darkness, destruction, and devastation, creating a renewed atmosphere of dialogue and discussion.

Ø  Mann Ki Baat has helped identify exam-related stress as a chronic problem, urging students to find their inner selves rather than succumbing to external and unhealthy pressure - this has transformational potential for the youth of the country.

Ø  The PM has sought to transform how the general public looks at specially-abled people through his Mann Ki Baat. PM Modi urged the nation to recognize the specially-abled

population as “divyang” due to their inherent divinity and considerable achievements, showcasing their strong will towards life.

Ø  The PM has motivated the youth through Mann Ki Baat to become self-reliant and focus on skill development. Modi Ji, through Mann Ki Baat, has promoted the start-up culture in the country along with a special emphasis on developing industry-related skills. Additionally, he has encouraged students to pursue science, keeping in mind India’s expanding space and science sector.

(iii)  Promoting the ‘Indian’ way of life: Our ancient culture and heritage have had a significant impact on many aspects of our lives and continue to be a source of inspiration and pride for every Indian. Since 2014, Prime Minister Sh. Narendra Modi, while speaking on various issues through his monthly radio programme, has also tried cultivating a lifestyle that embraces Indian cultural values and ethos amongst the citizens in the following way:

Ø  The PM has pronounced the philosophies of great personalities like Swami Vivekananda, Pt. Deen Dayal Ji, Veer Savarkar, Sardar Patel, Subhash Chandra Bose, Baba Saheb Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi, among many others.

Ø  The PM has inspired India through ancient traditional knowledge and reinvigorated India’s festive soul, sharing shlokas from Sanskrit poets and ancient texts like the Rigveda on Mann Ki Baat as well as from different religions and festivals.

Ø  Underscoring on Mann Ki Baat that “tourism is the best instructor for seeing the country’s beauty and understanding its people,” the PM has revived India’s tourism sector through people’s participation.
