Press Release

Press statement issued by
BJP National Spokesperson and MP, Shri Prakash Javadekar

Bharatiya Janata Party condemns the “post scripts” of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah over the hanging of Afzal Guru, one of the prime conspirators in the sensational attack on Indian Parliament in 2001.

In his venomnous interviews to the media, Mr Omar Abdullah has ended up sympathizing with Afzal Guru.  He describes him as a “young man of 43”, forgetting that six of the nine who were killed in the Parliament Attack were younger than Afzal.”

In his sensational interview the Chief Minister has also challenged the Supreme Court’s verdict by claiming that the judgement “depended on circumstantial evidence and the sentence was awarded to satisfy the collective conscience of the society.” He forgets conveniently that the Apex Court in its 271-page judgment delivered on Aug 4, 2005 had said “there was not even a shred of doubt about Afzal’s complicity in hatching of the criminal conspiracy to attack Parliament and evidence showed that he had actively participated in its execution.” The Supreme Court has further concluded that “short of participating in the actual attack, he did everything to set in motion the diabolic mission.”

In his interview Mr. Abdullah has also talked about “sense of alienation in the Valley”, which is actually an insult to the common Muslims in the Valley.  It is equal to bracketing common Muslims with that of terrorist and anti-national elements.

More serious is his claim that “the new generation in Kashmir will identify with Afzal Guru.”  BJP strongly condemns the denegation of the Kashmiri youths and is sure that Kashmiri youths today identify themselves with Cricketer Parvez Rasool” and IAS topper Shah Faizal and not with a terrorist like Afzal Guru.

The BJP also demands that the Congress should also clarify on whether they support or oppose the stance taken by the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, who is an ally of the UPA.

STAMPEDE IN ALLAHABAD

The BJP expresses shock and grief over the death of over 40 people in an “avoidable stampede” during the Maha Kumbh.  The BJP condoles the death precious lives and wish the speedy recovery of those injured in the unfortunate incident.

The BJP condemns the blatant attempt of the Central as well as UP Government to shift the blame on the other.  Both the Railway Ministry and the U.P Government are equally responsible for the incident as an unprecedented congregation was any way expected on the “Mauni Amawasya”.

The stampede is the grim reminder of the lackadaisical approach of the Government to take effective and pre-emptive measures to avoid such tragedy.

The challenge therefore is to have a fool-prove comprehensive plan for accident-free pilgrimages across the country.

The BJP demands an independent Judicial probe into the incident and immediate disbursement of compensation to the families of those killed.

ENVIRONMENTAL LICENSE RAJ

In the UPA regime Inspector and License Raj have returned in the form of Environmental clearances for various projects.

The Government has formed National Investment Board for speedy clearance of all development projects. But on the ground the environment clearance remains a major road block. Despite assurances from both the PMO and the Environment Ministry, fact remains that the Industry is faced with a new “Environment License Raj”

This is not in the interest of faster development of the country.  The Government is pulling in different directions on this issue and that is why the crisis persists.

There is a need for unanimity on this critical issue between the various organs of the government to resist the international pressure, which impact the cost competitiveness of Indian exports.
