Press Release

Press statement issued by BJP National Spokesperson and MP,
Shri Prakash Javadekar

Dual Price mechanism for diesel

The BJP condemns the dual price mechanism for diesel implemented by Congress-led UPA Government which has put an unprecedented burden on the common man.  This is a price hike in disguise. The Government while deregulating diesel has created two categories of customers, i.e. Bulk Users and customers purchasing from retail outlets of oil companies.  While the customers on retail outlets will be paying Rs 50 to Rs 54 per litre, the bulk users have been forced to pay Rs 62 to Rs 65 per litre.

The State Transport will have to shell Rs 3000 crore more by this decision. Likewise, the Railways will have to bear the brunt to the extent of Rs 3000 crores as well.   The public utilities like city bus services and other public utilities will also have to pay Rs 3000 crore more.  The private industries and other business establishments will be paying Rs 6000 crore more annually.  Thus, in one stroke the Government has imposed a burden of about Rs 18,000 crore through the new category called “bulk purchasers”.

All these services will obviously pass on the burden to the common man, who is already reeling under the impact of monthly hike in diesel prices.  The overall burden of the Government’s deregulation of diesel will be in the region of about Rs 60,000 crore.

Even the fishermen have been declared as bulk users.  With the new rules of dispensing of diesel to the consumers, even the farmers will be forced to pay the price of bulk diesel.

The BJP demands immediate roll back of the dual price mechanism and also recurring monthly hike in diesel retail prices.

Telengana Issue

The BJP condemns UPA Government’s dilly-dallying tactics on the issue of formation of a separate State of Telangana.  Government has gone back on its latest promise to take a final decision on the formation of Telangana by January 28, 2013.  The promise was given by Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde in the month of December after an all party meeting on the issue. This is yet another betrayal of the people of Telangana, which is unacceptable.

On December 9, 2009, the then Home Minister P Chidambaram had declared that the process of formation of separate State of Telangana has begun. But due to Congress’ politics it halted it the same day. Historically, the Congress has betrayed the people of Telangana since the days of agitation led by Shri Chenna Reddy in 1980s.

The BJP has been consistently demanding the formation of Telangana State.  Today we once again demand that the Central Government should immediately declare the formation of the new state and bring the necessary bill in the first week of the Budget Session.  The NDA has already committed its unequivocal support for such a bill. Otherwise, the Congress will have to pay a heavy political price.
