Resolution passed at the office-bearer's meeting on 24 March 2006

Press Release
 It is one of the greatest ironies of these times that a belated virtue is sought to be made from a compulsion which arose out of a conspiracy hatched by the Congress itself. This irony became comical when the conspiracy recoiled on the President of the Congress. Till date no satisfactory explanation has been given for the abrupt declaration of the house adjourned sine die. This was unfortunately done by keeping both Presiding Officers in the dark. The leadership of the Congress party has once again put India’s democracy to shame in the eyes of the world. When the self-engineered conspiracy seemed set to devour its own leader, her resignation under compulsion is being projected as another “sacrifice”. The BJP strongly condemns this theatre of the absurd.

There is no political morality at any stage in the bizarre developments that have led up to the present situation:

    • This entire episode of forcing a disqualification was engineered by the Congress itself little realising that it would also consume its leader;

    • Forcing Parliament to be adjourned sine-die on Wednesday by burying all canons and norms of parliamentary practice;

    • Preparing an ordinance for promulgation on Friday in order to save Shrimati Sonia Gandhi because the managers of the Congress Party knew very well that the status of the office of the Chairperson of the National Advisory Council would also come under the threat of disqualification;

    • The NDA delegation to the Hon'ble President had clearly impressed upon him to ensure that constitutional norms not be flouted again, that "the law is the same for everybody", and that no ordinance in haste be assented to by him;

    • The BJP had also filed a formal application through Shri Ananth Kumar, Gen Secy, to the Hon'ble President seeking the disqualification of Shrimati Sonia Gandhi;

    • The post of Chairperson NAC is not only an 'office of profit' but also an appointment that wields supreme power sans accountability. She had the unquestioned authority to monitor the implementation of CMP. Shrimati Sonia Gandhi was fully aware of these facts since, after all, she was the architect of this super-structure. Hence there was no escape for her but to face disqualification through the process of law that was already in motion.

The BJP would pose one question to Shrimati Sonia Gandhi as to where was the 'inner voice' when the Volcker investigation indicted the Congress Party as an illegal beneficiary. And when the offices of the Government of India were wantonly abused to ensure the release of Quattrochi's ill gotten Bofors funds. The BJP strongly condemns the entire handling by the Government of India and demands the immediate convening of the Parliament which is the correct forum to consider the issue.
