Statement by BJP National Spokesperson Shri Prakash Javadekar

Press Release
Bharatiya Janata Party decries the failure of UPA Govt. to control the skyrocketing onion prices. We condemn the Govt.'s decision not to import onions when it is in short supply. The Govt. is duty bound to help common man in need. Instead of protecting the people the Govt. is eager to allow middleman to grab huge profits. Govt. does not want to give subsidy despite their avowed promise to protect the AAM AADAMI.

With sugar at Rs. 22/KG, Kerosene which is unavailable through PDS costs Rs. 24/ltr in black market, Onion at Rs. 30/KG, continued shortage of LPG costing anything between Rs. 500-600/Cylinder, Diesel at Rs. 38-43/ltr, Petrol at Rs. 43-49/ltr, it seems this will be a BLACK DIWALI.

Worst is the response of the Govt. The Agriculture Minister Mr. Sharad Pawar says that people will have to bear with the rising cost of onions and Govt. is not contemplating any action. The Petroleum Minister Sh. Mani Shankar Iyer says that women should avoid purchasing new sarees and should avoid seeing movies to accommodate the rise in fuel prices. We condemn and deplore the statements of both these ministers, who have shown abject neglect of common man's interests.

Govt. knew before hand the coming onion crisis. It should have taken necessary steps to dilute the crisis. But Govt. did nothing and allowed middleman to exploit the market conditions and pocket the profits. 90% farmers have already sold their onions to the traders well before the price rise. The Govt. is tacitly helping the hoarders. It is neither taking any action against these traders nor importing sufficient quantity to deflate the situation.

The real motive of the Govt. is to save on subsidies. Now it is evident that the LPG imports were reduced deliberately to lessen the burden of subsidy and it is not importing the onions for the same reason.

It will not be out of place to remind Congress of the politics, they played with the onion prices in 1998. Knowing fully well the prevailing conditions of the time and the decision of the NDA Govt. to import the onions, Congress played its politics to the hilt. Now the same Congress is in power and owes an explanation and immediate action on onion and LPG.

2. Bharatiya Janata Party condemns the killings of 9 more Karbi tribals in a continued strife torn Anglong district. The Assam Govt. instead of protecting the tribals, is indulging in worst political gimmicks. The judicial probe ordered by the State Govt. is not to probe the ethnic clashes but is politically motivated to frame NDA convener George Fernandes without any proof. The ethnic clashes erupted because the State Govt. failed to solve the grievances of warring tribals in the first place and to protect them when the clashes broke out.
