Former Congress President of Manipur, Shri Govindas Konthoujam joins Bharatiya Janata Party

 

The former President of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Party (MPCC) Shri Govindas Konthoujam today joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. At a function held at the BJP headquarters in Delhi, Shri Govindas Konthoujam joined the BJP in presence of the Manipur Chief Minister Shri N Biren Singh, Manipur BJP President Smt A Sharda Devi, the BJP’s Manipur in-charge and party’s National Spokesperson Dr Sambit Patra and BJP National Media Head and Chief Spokesperson Shri Anil Baluni. Shri Govindas Konthoujam also met the Bharatiya Janata Party National President Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda ji.

 

Speaking after taking the membership of the BJP, Shri Govindas Konthoujam said next year assembly elections are scheduled in Manipur and he will work very hard to ensure that the Bharatiya Janata Party retains power in the state. Shri Govindas Konthoujam is a senior leader of Manipur and his entry into the Bharatiya Janata Party is seen as a big win for the BJP before the assembly elections in the state. Shri Govindas Konthoujam had resigned from the Congress party last month.

 

Speaking on the occasion, Manipur Chief Minister Shri N Biren Singh said the Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji has taken special care of the North Eastern states and recently he inducted five ministers from the region in his Cabinet, thus giving much emphasis and importance to the North Eastern States. The people of Manipur have pledged to make the Narendra Modi government stronger and to continue to support the BJP.

 

Shri N Biren Singh said since Shri Narendra Modi ji has become the Prime Minister, there has been a considerable improvement in the development and social indices of Manipur while there has been peace in the state and there has been allround growth and development.

 

The Manipur Chief Minister said, “I was also in the Congress party. But when the driver is sleeping, how will the vehicle run? Earlier Manipur was badly affected by violence, protests, dharnas and hartals; but since the Narendra Modi government took over, there has been peace and tranquillity in Manipur and growth and progress is taking place at faster pace. 

 

Shri Govindas Konthoujam is a senior leader of Manipur. He has been elected MLA six times consecutively from the Bishnupur assembly constituency. He has also been Congress party’s Chief Whip besides being the Cabinet Minister in the state government. Shri Govindas Konthoujam was known as a person very close to the Congress high command. The joining of Shri Govindas Konthoujam in the BJP is seen as a big success for the Bharatiya Janata Party before the assembly elections in Manipur next year.
