Originally hailing from Himachal Pradesh, Shri JP Nadda was born on 2 December 1960 in Patna, Bihar. After completing his BA from Patna University, he studied LL.B from Himachal Pradesh University. He actively participated in various movements run by Jai Prakash Narayan during his young age.He was associated with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and was elected ABVP's National Secretary in 1989. In 1991, he was made the President of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha. In 1993, he was elected as MLA in Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly for the first time and was elected Leader of Opposition. He was re-elected in 1998 and became the Health Minister in the BJP State Government. In 2010, he was made the National General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was elected as a Rajya Sabha member in 2012 for the first time. He took command of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, from 2014-2019. In June 2019, He was elected the National Working President of the Bharatiya Janata Party and in January 2020, the National President of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

He was born on 2 December 1960 in a Brahmin family to Dr. Narain Lal Nadda and Shrimati Krishna Nadda. He was educated at St. Xaviers School, Patna. His father was a professor in Patna University and later became the Vice-Chancellor of Ranchi University. In his childhood, he participated in the relay fast as part of J.P. movement, against the then Congress Chief Minister of Bihar, Shri Abdul Gafur.

Thereafter, he did his B.A. from Patna College, Patna University, and LL.B. from Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. He became active in the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad in Patna and played a dynamic role in the student movement in the-then ongoing Jai Prakash Narayan movement of 1975.

Organizing Secretary of the ABVP in Himachal Pradesh 1984

He was elected as the first President of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) ideology in Himachal Pradesh. In 1984, he served as the Organizing Secretary of ABVP in Himachal Pradesh as a full-time activist. Thereafter as a full-time activist of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad in Delhi, he served as Organizing Secretary and led various student movements to change the then political scenario through the Rashtriya Sangharsh Morcha from 1985 to 1989.

In 1989, he served as the National Secretary of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad. In 1990, he was sent to Himachal Pradesh as the Organizing Secretary in the Bharatiya Janata Party.

National President of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha 1991-93

In 1991, he was given the responsibility of the National President in the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha and worked under the leadership of the then National President Shri Murali Manohar Joshi and participated with the youth during the Tiranga Yatra. He was re-elected in 1993.

Elected to the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly 1993

For the first time in 1993, he was elected MLA from Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh and became the Leader of Opposition in the Himachal Pradesh assembly.

Minister for the first time in Himachal Pradesh Government 1998

1998

He was re-elected MLA in 1998-2003 and took charge of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Parliamentary Affairs as a cabinet minister in Himachal Pradesh State Government.

Minister of Forest and Environment, Science & Technology in HP 2007

In 2007, he was elected MLA for the third time and became the Minister of Forest and Environment, Science and Technology Department.

National General Secretary of Bharatiya Janata Party 2010

2010

In 2010, he became the National General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party after resigning from the Council of Ministers in Himachal Pradesh. While working as a member of the team of the-then National President Shri Nitin Gadkari, he was in charge of the Central Office and was appointed as Election in-charge for several states.

Elected to the Rajya Sabha for the first time 2012

In 2012, he was elected a member of Rajya Sabha from Himachal Pradesh. In 2013, he was re-elected National General Secretary under the tenure of Shri Rajnath Singh as Party’s National President. In 2014, he became a member of the Central Election Management Committee and in 2014, under the leadership of Shri Amit Shah, he was elected as National General Secretary for the third time and a member of the Parliamentary Board, the highest decision making body of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Union Minister of Health, Govt. of India 2014

In November 2014, he took charge as the Union Minister of Health, Government of India under the aegis of PM Shri Narendra Modi. In terms of organizational work, he served as in-charge and Election in-charge in several states including Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Telangana, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, and others.

Re-elected to the Rajya Sabha 2018

He was re-elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2018 from Himachal Pradesh.

BJP National Working President 2019

2019

After BJP’s resounding success at the Lok Sabha elections 2019 that saw the party win majority with 303 seats, National President Amit Shah took the responsibility of Union Home Minister in PM Modi’s cabinet. To share Shah’s party responsibilities, He was appointed the National Working President of the Bharatiya Janata Party on 17th June 2019.

On 20 January 2020, He was elected as the National President of the Bharatiya Janata Party unopposed.
