Press Statement by BJYM National President Shri Tejasvi Surya (MP)

BJYM felicitates the family of weightlifter Mirabai Chanu in Manipur for winning silver at the Tokyo Olympics

Mirabai Chanu from Manipur ended India’s 21-year wait to win an Olympic weightlifting medal. The 26-year-old earned the country its first medal in the ongoing Tokyo Olympics by clinching a silver in the 49kg category. The entire country has been showering praise on the star weightlifter for her remarkable performance.

She is the second Indian female weightlifter to achieve this feat after Karnam Malleswari who had won a bronze at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

Mirabai battled the odds to grab the silver at Tokyo. She underwent treatment for a lower back injury in November - December last year and turned the tide to walk away with a silver by recording a total score of 202 kg on Saturday. She has exhibited incredible transformation through her praiseworthy performance, opening India’s tally at Tokyo. A seasoned weightlifter, she had won Bronze at the Tashkent Asian Championships (2020), Gold in Gold Coast Commonwealth Games (2018) and Gold in Anaheim World Championships (2017).

The sports culture in Manipur is growing by leaps and bounds. The state has churned out some of the most seasoned weightlifters over the past years. The immense progress in developing its sporting infrastructure has been possible with the able leadership of PM Shri Narendra Modi.

Bhartiya Janta Yuva Morcha (BJYM), Manipur Team with their Nation-Wide Programme of Cheer4India launched under the leadership of National President Yuva Morcha Sh. Tejasvi Surya, visited Mirabai Chanu’s residence in Manipur to congratulate her family. The entire family was elated and expressed delight over her success at the Tokyo Olympics, 2021.

"An athlete's family is a pillar of strength for him or her. It’s the years of encouragement, sacrifices and support provided by the family that has helped every athlete perform. The BJYM is recognising their efforts today and felicitating the family of Mirabai for their silent contribution." Sh. Tejasvi Surya was quoted as saying.

He also said, “The BJYM is proud of all of the Indian athletes in Tokyo. The BJYM is supporting the Indian contingent in Tokyo in a big way by regularly performing tasks and building a sense of discipline and hard work through the #Cheer4India - Be Like an Olympian campaign.”
