A delegation of BJP members comprising of Sh. RP Singh, Sah Prabhari Punjab, Sh. Harjit Singh Grewal, Secy. BJP, Sh. Navjot Singh Sidhu, MP, Sh. Avinash Khanna, MP and President BJP Punjab, Sh. BL Rinwa former State President BJP met Sh. L K Advani, Leader of Opposition to apprise him about the banning of turban in France in its institutions. The delegation requested him to raise this issue with his Excellency Mr. Jacques Chirac, President of France to whom his meeting today evening.
The delegation emphasized that it was not only Senior French Officers have served classless army of Maharaj Ranjit Singh but never forced to wear turbans while Sikhs have also contributed valiantly to the French aspirations of 'liberty, equality and fraternity' during the two World Wars when turban-wearing Sikh soldiers served in France in 13 Cavalry and 8 Infantry regiments."
This issue has cropped up because of a reassessment by the French government of how to preserve the principle of separation of religion from the state, especially in the light of the large number of Muslims now living in France. There is no doubt that proposal are muddled and have not taken into account the sensitivities of the people who are likely to be affected as turban is not like a headgear or a hat, which can be taken of at a will. But it is a part of complete being and body of Sikhs.
