News agencies have reported that the frozen Quottrochi's Accounts have been defrozen. If that be so, our worst fears have come true. This has happened due to:
* The collusion of the political executive of India with Mr. Otavio Quottrochi.
* The unauthorized intervention of the Minister of Law, Shri HR Bhardwaj, the Minister of Personnel & Training and the Additional Solicitor General of India in the independent functioning of the CBI.
The damage has already been done. The Bofors case has a history of sabotage by the Congress and Congress supported Governments. By such collusive processes the Government wants to establish that there is no material or evidence against Quottrochi, who apparently was as close as the investigation could get to the Powers that be.
The fact that the Government did not act even during the past one week is not an evidence of the paralysis that has struck the Government on this issue. It is an evidence of the fact that the powers that be in this Government wanted to help Quottrochi. Is it not a fact that Otavio Quottrochi was a close social friend of the UPA Chairperson Mrs. Sonia Gandhi? Is it not a fact that the ruling Congress Party has always argued that a vindication of Quottrochi will be a vindication of Mrs. Sonia Gandhi and her late husband? Is it not a fact that Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh is the Cabinet Minister of the Personnel Department, which sanctioned the Additional Solicitor General's visit to England and prevented the CBI investigator from accompanying him?
The silence of the Prime Minister and the PMO is eloquent. The silence of the UPA Chairperson gives the answers, which are loud and clear. If no answers are being given, no answers to these questions could have been given. The conspiracy of silence does not absolve the UPA Chairperson and the Prime Minister. If at all it inculpates them.
Is there any mechanism in this Government for accountability? Will the Government equipped with the arrogance of power brazen out this scam as merely a crisis in the passing? Will the Principal Left parties merely continue to pontificate without a willingness to strike? These are not merely political issues. They raise serious moral issues.
The BJP reiterates that the Law Minister whose direct involvement in this matter has been established should be dismissed forthwith. The Prime Minister and the UPA Chairperson are answerable on this issue. The Indian Tax Payer has been robbed to enrich a fugitive. On trial is not merely a corruption case. It is the Indian Democracy, which has been challenged. India is not a Banana Republic, where laws can be twisted to help an Italian fugitive merely because he has powerful political patrons.
