Bharatiya Janata Party demands that the UPA Govt. should refrain from imposing yet another dose of petroleum price hike. Instead it should take a decision of duty neutralisation immediately. BJP charged the Govt. of adopting adohcism for last 20 months.
The UPA Govt. has increased petrol diesel prices for six times in their 20 months regime. A whopping increase of 35% in oil prices has hit the common man and industry alike. This is the largest increase in shortest period of time. Govt. blames the situation on the increase of prices in International oil market, but the reality is that 65% of oil prices in India, are duties such as custom and excise duty, education and infrastructure cess and sales tax. This has nothing to do with International prices.
The burden of these duties and taxes increase automatically with every decision of price rise. The production cost of petrol is just Rs. 17.52/ltr but the duty burden is Rs. 26.00/ltr, while the diesel costs Rs. 18.53/ltr and the duty burden is Rs. 12.00/ltr. This probably is the highest taxation regime in the world. BJP demands reduction in duty burden to correct this anomaly and help the common man. It can start with policy of duty neutralisation as a first step. The Finance Minister should announce this policy in the coming Budget.
Bharatiya Janata Party demands a detailed discussion on Rangarajan committee report in Parliament before taking any decision about the petroleum prices. The new petroleum minister instead of giving hollow promises should ensure this exercise and also ensure availability of kerosene and LPG, which is in short supply in many parts of the country even today.
