Statement issued by Shri Prakash Javadekar,National Spokesperson BJP

Press Release
1. Bharatiya Janata Party squarely blames UPA Government for taking anti people measures in form of its inaction on the housing loan interest front and import of large quantity of wheat. Last two years of UPA Government has seen an unprecedented increase of over 50 percent in the housing loan interest rates, hitting the middle class and its decision to import large quantities of wheat after a gap of eight years is hitting the interests of the Indian farmers. BJP deplores these anti people policies of the UPA Government.

The housing loan rates, which came down to 6 percent during NDA regime have gone up to 9.5 percent in UPA regime. The efforts of NDA to bring down the interest rates resulted in tremendous expansion in housing industry and employment. More importantly it helped countless people to own a home. The overall demand for housing increased because of these policies. But the UPA Government sat idle while the Banks increased the home loan rates for profiteering. When the bank rate has not increased there is no reason why such a hike should happen. The banks are giving loans to big industries at 7-8 percent but refuse to give such treatment to the housing loan sector. BJP demands a ceiling of 7 percent interests rates for housing and agriculture loans.

2. The decision of the UPA Government to import wheat on large scale is stabbing the Indian farmers in their back. The Government will be paying Rs 10 per kg. to Australian farmers but is paying just Rs 7 per kg. to Indian farmer. A slew of policy measures like reducing the buffer stock, allowing private companies to enter the food grain market, not increasing the procurement prices for wheat and rice in the name of diversification of crops, reducing the PDS quantity and untimely decision of importing wheat apart from being tremendous burden on exchequer are all anti-farmer and anti-people policies. With these policies the prices of wheat and related items have gone up hitting consumers without benefit to the farmers.
