Press Release regarding memorandum submitted to the Election Commission of India by BJP delegation

A Bharatiya Janata Party high level delegation comprised of BJP National Gen Secretary Shri Bhupender Yadav, Union Minister Shri Piyush Goyal, BJP National Spokesperson Dr Sambit Patra, Sh Swapan Dasgupta, Sh Anirban Ganguly, Sh Om Pathak, Sh Neeraj Kumar & Sh Shishir Bajoria submitted a memorandum to the Election Commission of India Today.

Key points of the memorandum

On 10th March 2021, Ms. Mamata Banerjee, the Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, was hurt in an alleged incident. As per media reports, Ms. Banerjee has apparently suffered some injury during her road show. We wish her speedy recovery and good health.

It bears mention that Ms. Banerjee is also the Chief Minister of West Bengal and holds portfolio of Ministry of Home Affairs to which the state police and administration reports. Thus, while filing her nomination on the date of alleged incident, she was escorted by her team of dedicated security personnel alongwith thousands of party workers. Infact, the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police of Purba Medinipur were directly responsible and accountable for the smooth conduct of entire electoral proceedings. Further, as per the Election Commission guidelines, the whole proceedings were being video-graphed.

It is apposite to mention that the version of facts put up in the public domain by Ms. Banerjee and her party has is in sharp contradiction to a number of eye-witness accounts, broadcasted in the mainstream media which otherwise manifest that no such attack ever took place rather it was an unfortunate accident while boarding the car.

The same are available on https://twitter.com/swapan55/status/1369850109849141251?s=19 and https://twitter.com/BJP4Bengal/status/1369840245953294343?s=09 on twitter.

It would thus be in the fitness of things that the unedited/raw video-footages of the alleged incident and the proceedings, in the custody of this Hon’ble Commission, be released at the earliest. This would help put rest all the controversial associated with the alleged incident and repose the electorates’ faith in this sacrosanct process. This is particularly important because Ms. Banerjee’s party members have indulged in deliberate mis-information campaign and canards against the Election Commission.

Further, for an impartial and objective investigation of the said matter, it is requested that special team of professional investigators be immediately constituted and sent by the Commission with a mandate to conduct a time-bound investigation.

Further, AC Nandigram Assembly constituency from which Ms. Banerjee is contesting is a sensitive seat, hence it is imperative that a Special Observer for the said constituency be appointed immediately. It is also requested that provision for web cast facility be also made available in all polling booths of AC Nandigram and all other sensitive constituencies.

At this juncture it would relevant to reiterate that the Ex-Mayors, Municipal Councilors and Party workers of AITC (whose tenures have expired long back) are brazenly canvassing for their party, albeit masquerading as “Administrators” of local bodies, thus grossly violating the provisions of The West Bengal Municipal Act, 1993. This is exemplified from the fact that these “Administrators/Officials” have not taken any action against unauthorized hoardings and political advertisements of the AITC carrying photos of Ms. Mamata Banerjee which continue to be displayed across the State of West Bengal in blatant violation of the Model Code of Conduct. The same was previously represented to this Hon’ble Commission vide representation dated 04.03.2021.

It is thus requested that for the conduct of free, fair and violence-free elections, which has been the hallmark of this Commission and is otherwise essential for the democratic polity of this Nation, a Special Observer be appointed for AC Nandigram Assembly constituency and the alleged incident be investigated by Special Investigators by this Commission.

We therefore request the Commission as follows:

    1. Videos received by the Commission be made public for unearthing the truth and the knowing the real sequence of events. This would also put to rest the smear campaign attempted by the AITC against the Election Commission and opposition parties.

    1. Strict action be taken against the AITC party leaders for breach of model code of conduct and under various electoral laws against the errant and irresponsible allegations that went flying all over.

    1. A special team of professional investigators be immediately constituted and sent by the Commission with a mandate to conduct a time-bound investigation.

    1. Special Observer be appointed for AC Nandigram Assembly constituency considering that it is a sensitive seat.
