Press : Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman on attack on Hindus in Bangladesh

Press Release

Press statement issued by BJP National Spokesperson,
Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman

BJP takes a serious note of the violence against Hindu minority groups in Bangladesh.

Whilst we acknowledge the domestic security issues of Bangladesh are their internal matters, the much reported post-poll violence has not remained just that. It is reported that "Systematic attacks were carried out... Most of the attacks took place in the minority dominated villages in the northern districts of Thakurgaon, the southern district of Chittagong and western Jessore." Bangladeshi media has even described these attacks on the Hindu communities in four districts as despicable. It is also claimed that hundreds of houses of the minority community were torched and looted since after the elections.

Similarly, the Pakistan Hindu Council has repeatedly sounded out alarm bells on targeted torture & rape of Hindu girls leading to forceful religious conversion. Pakistan’s Dawn.com claims that, because of the forced conversion of Hindu girls, as well as other discriminations and crimes — such as attacks on Hindu temples — 3,000 Hindus fled to India in 2012 — a third more than the previous year. IRIN — a news service of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs — reported on the targeted rape of Hindu girls leading to forced conversion to Islam. Indian media also has highlighted that this is a growing trend wherein 15-20 incidences are reported in Karachi alone each month. The Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has also reported on similar lines. The instability in our neighbourhood, be it Bangladesh or Pakistan, is resulting in minority citizen-largely Hindus, being targeted and harassed.

The Ministry of External Affairs should take up these issues carefully in the diplomatic sphere.
