Press Statement by BJP National Spokesperson Dr Sambit Patra

Trump's visit will be a landmark moment in the Indo-US relationship but Congress is worried about its sinking fortunes only! Start taking pride in the nation’s achievements.

*****************

This is a meeting of the world's largest and oldest democracies and it should be celebrated. Why Congress is unhappy when the country's stature is being raised globally.

*****************

Mr Trump himself has said on multiple occasions that India is a hard negotiator so the Congress should not worry about deliverables.

*****************

From Sochi to Mamallapuram to now the Trump visit, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has worked hard to take important bilateral relationships with India to the next level of engagement.

*****************

Close cooperation with the White House has ensured that India remains a front-runner and in the center of the Trump’s White House strategic blue-print.

*****************

From trade deal that factors in India’s interests to latest cutting edge defense equipment; US has offered deals and agreements which were never before offered to India in the UPA years.

*****************

India and US have worked together to ensure that Counter Terrorism cooperation has reached a level that has not been seen ever before. Designation of dreaded terrorists by international agencies including the UN, is a very tangible outcome of this process.

*****************

What did the UPA under Congress achieved after 26/11? We got the grey-listing of Pakistan through FATF done; Congress let them get away scot free.

*****************

India and the US now regularly engage at the highest level through formats like 2+2 and the Mini 2+2. Did 10 Janpath ever allow even the then Prime Minister Shri Manmohan Singh to develop such rapport with his international colleagues?

BJP National Spokesperson Dr Sambit Patra addressed a press conference at the BJP headquarters today and lashed out at Congress Party saying that It is Congress, which is responsible for not encouraging a mutual Indo-US relations.

Dr Patra said that Trump's visit will be a landmark moment in the Indo-US relationship but the Congress is worried about its sinking fortunes only! He advised the Congress to "start taking pride in the nation's achievements". Hitting out at the Congress over its scepticism about US President Donald Trump's visit to India, Dr Patra asked why the Congress is unhappy when the country's stature is being raised globally. This is a meeting of the world's largest and oldest democracies and it should be celebrated”, he said.

The BJP Spokesperson said that Mr Trump himself has said on multiple occasions that India is a hard negotiator so the Congress should not worry about deliverables. The US President has in his imitable style questioned the “deliverables” of the India-US relationship over the past seventy years in which, the Congress was in power most of the time. What more proof do we need of the Congress party’s ineptitude and lazy handling of critical foreign ties. It took Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s interventions to ensure that the then American President Mr Barack Obama was accorded the honour of being the Chief Guest at the Republic Day parade in January 2015. Does the Congress mean to say that India-US ties were not important enough till 2014?

Dr Patra said, from Sochi to Mamallapuram to now the Trump visit, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has worked hard to take important bilateral relationships with India to the next level of engagement. Regional forums like JAI (Japan-America-India) and RIC (Russia-India-China) have been given added impetus only under Prime Minister Shri Modi. This has enabled a fast projection of India’s prestigious image in the global arena.

The BJP Spokesperson said, “Close cooperation with the White House has ensured that India remains a front-runner and in the center of the Trump’s White House strategic blue-print”. He further added, “From trade deal that factors in India’s interests to latest cutting edge defense equipment; US has offered deals and agreements which were never before offered to India in the UPA years”. India and US have worked together to ensure that Counter Terrorism cooperation has reached a level that has not been seen ever before. Designation of dreaded terrorists by international agencies including the UN, is a very tangible outcome of this process. What does the Congress have to say in it’s defence? What did they achieve after 26/11? We got the grey-listing of Pakistan through FATF done; Congress let them get away scot free.

Highlighting Indo-US relations, Dr Patra said that enabling agreements like COMCASA (Communications Compatibility and Security Agreement) and ISA (Industrial Security Agreement), with BECA (Basic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement) to be signed shortly, have ensured that US, cutting across advanced sectors like Defence and Space; now share the latest technology with us. What are the Congress’ achievements? India and US now regularly engage at the highest level through formats like 2+2 and the Mini 2+2, enabling our Ministers and Secretaries to be in close touch not just with their US counterparts; but also with other US treaty allies like Japan, South Korea and Australia. Did 10 Janpath ever allow even the then Prime Minister Shri Manmohan Singh to develop such rapport with his international colleagues?
